Images 1-3 used improvised tools including sticks, sponges and mascara brushes, which, despite making it difficult to precisely control the ink, reflected the uncultivated landscape. I then enlarged and focused upon specific areas, still experimenting with other methods of mark making.
The tone of this project influenced my puppet making project, where my choice of a wolf suited the wild and gloomy atmosphere. I studied the animal in order to better understand their build, while the construction of a paper shadow puppet allowed me to find the key points of articulation in preparation for my wire and wool puppet.
The brief for images 7-9 began with rearranging a passage of text, creating something new to illustrate. Although focusing on a 'Green Knight', in an effort to avoid traditional Arthurian illustrations, I chose to take inspiration from Arthur Rackham and Mervyn Peake, whose use of inky lines and colours lent itself to the mythical and ethereal story.
Images 10-11 were inspired by birds, particularly the theatricality of the peacock, which encouraged me to experiment with knitting and emulsion transfers, leading to a number of costume designs based upon key features of the patterns and colourings of the birds.
Image 12 is from a project to create a society. It was important to me that my work was produced by hand, in accordance with the principle that technology inhibits experience. I chose to use velvet and knitting in place of paint; textured materials which appeal to the sense of touch as well as well as sight.
Manchester Metropolitan, aside from being in a location in which you can immerse yourself in art, music and culture, offers a course which is not centred upon computer animation. While I appreciate that technology is becoming more prevalent, I would like the opportunity to explore traditional techniques, and this is something which Manchester provides, and which many other establishments no longer facilitate.
